Crooked Brains has a nice article showing how the computer desktop has evolved since Apple released the first Mac in 1984.For my money, things finally started to look reasonable around 1995 when Mac OS 8 and Windows 95 appeared.
My guess would be that it coincided with better graphics chips and higher resolution CRTs appearing.
