During the adventurers' first contact with the sphere, it changes its surface to mimic what it sees.
Well, artist Daniel Rozen has created a low res version using an array of tubes, each with a ping pong ball at the front and a little motor at the back.
Each ball is chrome-painted to be dark on one half and light on the other. A computer inside controls the motors, to orient the balls so that together they display a representation of what a camera, mounted in the centre of the array, sees.
